MRE...Meals Ready to Eat...a prime feature in the bonding moments of soldiers in the trenches of combat movies. But what is actually in an MRE? Should you buy them to stock up?
I opened one, mostly curious to see what actually comes in the MREs that civilian can readily buy. I got this one off Amazon: Meals Ready to Eat.
MRE: What's Inside
- Pretzels
- Multigrain Snack bread
- Peanut butter
- Apple Jelly
- Chocolate-hazelnut cocoa beverage powder
- Beef Stew (entree)
- MRE heater unit
- spoon
- Nut raisin mix
- Tiny pack:
- 2 pieces of gum
- Tabasco sauce
- wet wipe
- toilet paper
- "Beverage base raspberry" powder
- salt
MRE: Is it for me?
Hm....I am not so sure. While I like the idea of it all being sealed for storage, I don't actually want to eat any of this. Of course I won't be picky in an emergency...but given the choice between hard as a rock "bread snack" and a Twinkie...I'll take the Twinkie.
I originally had 3 of them in my 72-hr bag, but I am now thinking I should swap them out for protein bars and trail mix. There are now other commercially available, shelf-stable for the short-term, items that can take the place of a prepared MRE.
Conclusion
MRE's are a complete kit and waterproof sealed. They had been tested for harsh conditions in the heat and the cold. Amazon delivers. They have their uses.
But likely I won't be buying a whole case of them. There are other options out there, and still ready to eat.
Are MRE's apart of your plan? Would you stock them or do you stock other ready to eat options? Let us know in the comments below.
