Review of Boston Firearms Safety Training School:
Part 1: Legal Stuff
This is first and foremost a legal course in Massachusetts firearms law. Therefore, it's not very interesting. The instructors did their best to convey the legal information in the most memorable way possible. They also gave a sense of where by town, a person was likely to get both the firearms id card (for guns less than 5 bullets) and the License to Carry (concealed carry + guns more than 5 bullets). As this is a a town by town police decision, it can vary depending on where you live.
Part 2: Load/Unload Practice
The second part of the course was hands-on operation and disarming of handguns. We got practice with revolvers and basic handguns. We repeatedly loaded and unloaded the weapons in an attempt in 3 hours to develop muscle memory and good handling habits. This is valuable for everyone, even those who don't plan to own a gun. Knowing how to unload a gun and safety take it apart is a great skill everyone should know.
Part 3: Live Fire
The third part was the live fire portion. This wasn't so much teaching but just an opportunity to fire a handgun if you never had. This was not a requirement for the course, but was the most fun part. I did terribly but it was my first time; Tim scored a little bit better than me.
But all of my bullets hit the paper! That was my threshold goal.
Conclusion
It was a mostly fun class as the instructors tried really hard not to make it boring. They included speed loading/unloading practice as well as live fire to make it more participatory and exciting. I don't plan to take this class again, but would take some of their other specific training.
